Today, I received some pictures from a client I have been working with for two years.

We are on the same page, and I understand exactly what she is looking for. This year, she asked me to remove part of her front lawn (which I’m excited about!) and prepare the area for planting. She didn’t want a design and has purchased plugs from a website I recommended, along with some tips for planting that I’ve provided. She loves gardening and is aiming for a healthy garden, ideally full of pollinators.

A few days ago, we worked on removing the grass that had regrown over the summer. We placed cardboard and mulch to kill the weeds, and for areas where that didn’t work out, she will sow native seeds.

Please take a look at the pictures of part of the journey and what she had during the summer! I’m so proud of her and love helping her achieve her garden goals.

Did you know that many bulb flowers bloom early in spring, just when pollinators are particularly hungry for nectar and pollen?

By planting a variety of bulb types with different bloom times, you can ensure a continuous food source for pollinators throughout the season.

Look for bulbs with open, easily accessible flowers, as these are easier for pollinators to reach. Some pollinator-friendly bulbs include daffodils, tulips, crocuses, hyacinths, and glory-of-the-snow.

If you are looking for a beautiful fall color combination, consider Clethra alnifolia and Hydrangea quercifolia. They also combine well with Viburnums such as dentatum and nudum. For smaller companions, you might choose Tiarella cordifolia (foam flower) or Heuchera villosa (coral bell). These plants thrive in partial shade and require moist but well-drained soil. Virginiana Rose could be your choice if you are a “Rose lover.” It is a gorgeous native rose with abundant, open blooms easily accessible to various pollinators. It has beautiful pink open flowers from June to August, followed by deep red hips that persist into fall and winter. It is a low-medium-statured native shrub and can respond well to pruning, making it an ideal candidate for a lower shrub in a hedge like what we do in my client’s house or planting near a house. The fall color is lovely. So, if you have the right place, plan it! 😀🌸

We began taking care of this house earlier this year. During the first visit, I noticed that everything was overgrown. Some beautiful plants like clethras and spectacular hydrangeas quercifloras were hidden among the overgrown boxwood and required proper pruning.

There is a shaded area next to the driveway that is also filled with overgrown plants that were transplanted. My clients asked me to design something beautiful that won’t end up like the current situation.

I decided on a simple design for this area, which my clients loved 😀. I used ilex glabra, Helleborus, and Itea Virginia ‘Little Henry.’ I also removed the invasive ground cover towards the sunny area and mixed two types of phlox subulate.

I always remind my clients that less is more. Plants can grow more than expected, and even though we design with the assumption that the client will do some maintenance, sometimes our work can seem lost when they don’t.

Because pollinators are essential to the food chain and the health of ecosystems. Pollinators help plants reproduce by carrying pollen from one plant to another.

This process is critical for reproducing over 75% of the world’s flowering plants, including many food crops. Many plants could not produce seeds without pollinators, which would devastate the food chain.

It’s important to have a variety of pollinators because some pollinators may visit different plants, and some plants may be pollinated by different pollinators. This provides some insurance in case certain pollinator species are absent in some years.

Today, I was going through some pictures on my computer, and I came across these, and got a little emotional.

These are my first designs from when I decided to start my business. The only thing I knew for sure was that I knew how to grow plants and the conditions under which they grew well, but I didn’t know how to arrange them so that they looked good together and made a functional and aesthetically attractive garden over time.

I was always a terrible drafter; my background is engineering, not architecture or art, so like a good nerd, I started taking courses (I took several) because there is never too much for a person like me 😆. I bought and read very interesting books as well, and little by little, I started to design, and see how everything was flowing. I started to find clients who believed in me and gave me opportunities (I am very blessed)

As I started to get more clients, I felt the need to improve my proposals and acquired a software. Today, I continue with my software, but I also work with architects; they work with more complex software than mine and, of course, with prettier images.

Although everything varies from project to project, sometimes I also feel that clients, beyond seeing spectacular images, need to see that you, as a professional, know what you are doing and understand their needs, because a paper or a program can handle absolutely anything, but when we go into the field, we find reality.

Lobelia siphilitica is blooming in my client’s garden, and Chelone lyonii will start blooming soon. They make such a good combo.

Where to plant?

Lobelia siphilitica (great blue lobelia) is a native perennial that is highly adaptable to various garden environments, thriving in full sun, part shade, or full shade light conditions, and challenging soil conditions, ranging from moist to wet areas with loam, clay, or sandy soil where few other plants thrive.

Minimal care is required. There’s no need to deadhead the flowers, as allowing them to go to seed provides a valuable food source for birds. Leaving the stems standing in the fall offers overwintering sites for beneficial insects. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots. Once established, you can reduce the frequency of watering.

If you have space for this beautiful plant in your garden, please plant it.

Lately, we have been pruning and removing weeds. In the summer, everything grows, and with this crazy weather, some plants are out of control. Unfortunately, this beautiful garden is invaded by English ivy, and although there are many super good plants, the ivy is invading everything, even climbing on very tall trees, which becomes very dangerous. This is why every so often we have to come back to maintain it and make sure that everything is in balance.

‘Ruby Spice’ is a cultivated variety of the ea

‘Ruby Spice’ is a cultivated variety of the eastern coastal U.S. native Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia). Their flower spikes retain the fragrance, making Clethra a desirable summer flowering shrub.

Clethra is amazingly adaptable, growing equally well in full sun or shade, moist or dry conditions. It’s an excellent choice for a natural garden or a mixed border. It’s salt tolerance and deer resistance.

The flowers produce high-quality nectar and pollen that support hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. The shrub produces a brown, dry capsule that matures in the fall and provides seed to birds in winter.

I planted clethra here to create a hedge for my client. It looks natural and smells delightful.

We have been gradually transforming this garden fo

We have been gradually transforming this garden for the past three years. This year, we successfully removed 3 out of 4 large Chinese grasses and replaced them with panicum virgatum and little bluestem (we left one until the natives grow). We also planted several native species and are looking for a garden with a mix of colors that attracts life and blooms from spring to fall. We planted Callirhoe involucrata (poppy mallow), phlox subulata (creeping pholx), Asclepia incarnata (Swamp Milkweed), Conoclinium coelestinum (blue mistflower), monarda fistulosa(bee balm), Amsonia tabernaemontana(amsonia bluestar), and viola sororia (blue violet), among others.
