We have been gradually transforming this garden for the past three years. This year, we successfully removed 3 out of 4 large Chinese grasses and replaced them with panicum virgatum and little bluestem (we left one until the natives grow). We also planted several native species and are looking for a garden with a mix of colors that attracts life and blooms from spring to fall. We planted Callirhoe involucrata (poppy mallow), phlox subulata (creeping pholx), Asclepia incarnata (Swamp Milkweed), Conoclinium coelestinum (blue mistflower), monarda fistulosa(bee balm), Amsonia tabernaemontana(amsonia bluestar), and viola sororia (blue violet), among others.

When I first met this client, she had many plants

When I first met this client, she had many plants around the pool, however, they were all different plants, which she bought at a nursery without considering if they were suitable for the places they were planted. As a result, many plants were not in good shape because some that require full or partial sun were planted in the shade, such as Stokes asters, Alliums millennium, and Amsonia.

The design helped her organize and simplify her garden because she doesn’t have much time to take care of it. We added some of the same plants that she already has, but we located them in the right place. All the plants that we added are native, drought-tolerant plants to facilitate the maintenance. We did the front yard and backyard last year for t

We did the front yard and backyard last year for this client. She started to have some water issues this year and after she fixed it, we came back to add some plants that help manage rainwater and filter runoff. We added chelone glabra and New England aster.

We also removed the old path and built a curved new one using all the stones she had and with gravel base in order to to improve the drainage.

Finally we created a nice gravel area in the backyard last year, but since she had a huge stump which was removed this year (by a tree company) the area needed a new touch. We added more gravel and now it is ready for some furniture, and why not a pergola.

We installed this garden two months ago. We plante

We installed this garden two months ago. We planted a native garden in front of this beautiful pool. The area is partially shaded and has moist soil but well drained. We removed the invasive Japanese barberry and kept some evergreen, non-native, no-invasive plants that my client had.

In another part of the house, my client has a drainage issue, so we planted Carex amphibole since it thrives in wet areas, and its roots will help to drain the water better.

🌱My name is Lorena, and I’m a Forest Engineer (MSc), landscaper, and gardener.

🌱 The name “Jade” for my company is inspired by the indoor plant Jade (crassula ovata), which is one of my favorites. Jade plants symbolize happiness and prosperity.

🌱 I’m from Chile 🇨🇱, the last, long and tiny country in South America. I’m married and a mom of two teenage boys.

🌱 I’ve been working in landscaping for 5 years, and I absolutely love my job!

🌱 I advocate for native plants, but I also respect my clients’ preferences. If you want something non-native but not invasive, I will plant it. However, I DO NOT plant invasive species.

Our primary goal for this project was to prevent flooding in the area, which had been a long-standing issue for my client. We achieve this by cleaning the area, relocating the existing shrubs, and adding soil to adjust the area’s level to facilitate water runoff. Additionally, we planted native shrubs and perennials that, with their deep root systems, will help to improve the drainage.

Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is a flowering

Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is a flowering broadleaf evergreen shrub with a multi-stemmed growth habit. It has beautiful spring blooms and elliptical, glossy, deep-green leaves.

This shade-loving shrub produces clusters in late May to early June. If the flowers are not deadheaded, nondescript brown fruits will appear.

Mountain laurel is highly prized because it performs well in part shade, but deep shade may reduce its flowering and cause leaf spots. It can tolerate full sun, but the deep-green leaves may turn yellowish.

These shrubs like cool, moist but well-drained, acidic soil (pH 5.0 to 5.5). Its natural habitat is woodsy areas near swampy zones, but not in soggy soil. It dislikes heavy clay soils. If you have dense soil, consider planting mountain laurel in raised berms or planters filled with a well-draining soil mix.
